Is Knife Crime related to lack of youth facilities?

Today Labour at Northampton Borough Council are proposing a motion calling for a Sports Strategy for the people of Northampton. This is in preparation for the move to Unitary in 2020. The councils we are merging with are advanced in identifying the sports facilities and needs in their districts.

It has long been recognised that one of the ways to divert vulnerable young people away from crime is to meet their needs and offer other avenues for them to engage in.

Cllr. Danielle Stone (Castle Labour Group Leader) says “We all know the benefits of being active in sport. It is important on a number of levels. The people of Northampton need a proper strategy to look at ways to provide the facilities our youth need. It’s important that there is a proper register of the current facilities and the condition they are in. There may be some quick fixes that can provide sports facilities quickly, as well as protecting what we have.

This needs to be done before we get swallowed up in the new Unitary where they could be lost for ever. We owe it our youth”
